Jorge Marco Turino is a mysterious work to me. It emerged from an immense opportunity to construct my own creative laboratory in Sitka, Alaska. I found myself in that island town, living in what was once a missionary school dorm overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I was eating fresh Salmon every day, hiking mountains with an illustrator from Germany, feeling heartbroken and wildly in love at the same time. I can’t remember a time when I though of myself as a musician less. Each morning, I was writing poems, drawing, stretching, drinking a lot of coffee, and studying the tarot. Lengthy improvisations on an upright piano in my makeshift studio and late open tuning nights on my bunk bed with my guitar were where my ideas for these songs started to emerge. The finished compositions were collages. Shortly after I got back to New York, I went up to a new studio near Bennington, VT and recorded the songs in a more pristine format, maybe attempting to exorcise the ghosts of the three women I’d shared a goodbye kiss with that summer.
It’s been almost four years since that session, and since then my life and music have gone forward and exploded in all kinds of new directions. When a strange mystic from Mexico told me in May of 2014 that the name, or character of, Richard was dead and that my new spirit name was Jorge Marco Turino, I tend to think she was right. This album bears Jorge’s name, and I hope, some of the spirit of that very creatively flush period of my life. I’m happy to be able to share this work with my community in 2018, and hope that the world will have the patience for the more radical works to follow.
